... Back in Class

Our team was the first to get back from our missions trip so we had something like 4 days to just relax before class started again. The other teams weren't as fortunate, however. The India team got back 3 days before class started, which is brutal for them because there's like a 12 hour time difference so they were all dead when we say them. The Vancouver team got back 2 days before class started but they didn't travel very far so they were fine. Once we were all settled again we had a 4 or 5 hour night of just sharing our experiences from our trips. It was pretty sweet to hear what happened in the other parts of the world our groups were in.

Anyways, we're back in class for our last course of Kaleo :( It's studies in Christian worldview which is pretty much just philosophy class. It's been pretty confusing but it's also been incredibly informative. Basically, the kind of beliefs people in western society have had for a while have been the modernist view, which is basically the trust in science which leads into more technological advances which leads into economic growth (or so modernism says). Obviously this has failed when we look at the economic collapse a few years ago and other things like that. It also has its base on human autonomy which is pretty much just being able to govern yourself and the decisions you make, following reason. Now culture is moving towards postmodernism which is pretty much just taking everything in modernism and believing the opposite of it. Modernism was all about objective truth but postmodernism is all about relative truth; basically people make their own reality and decide what they think is true to be true.

The church today is mostly following the modernist view. This means that they take their beliefs as objective truth, which is truth as seen from nowhere. This means that they believe that just the idea of Christ and God and all that is true. We talked about this not really being the right way to live out our faith. The main point is that there's a third way of seeing it, which is to bear witness to the truth as faithful participants rather than argue it from nowhere. Pretty much to live in a way that doesn't make any sense if God didn't exist. That's the truth we need to live out. If we just preach using logic and reason rather than living out our faith, all we do is convert people to the idea of God rather than Him actually living within us.

It's been a crazy class so far, but it's been amazing and I've been learning and growing through it.
